Yay! I have a new blog post up for you. Apologies as it has been a crazy few weeks with painting our home and I was out shooting (for photography) pretty much ever day of last week. That means, I have a ton of editing to do this week. Thank you for your patience though but here it is as requested. I hope you find this informative because I love to help other people out as much as I can and especially when it comes to saving money, hell yeah.
So what is Rakuten? Is it legit or is it a scam? First things first, Rakuten is an online company that gives you cash back for shopping through their affiliated stores. They have a ton of stores to shop from and offers discounts/cash back. Some examples are Amazon, Forever 21, Kohls, Sephora, Petsmart, Etsy, and so much more. If you're anything like me, I love to occasionally online shop so getting some cash back is a no brainer. Plus, it's totally FREE to use so you don't have to pay a thing to Rakuten.

I have been using Rakuten since February 2016 and have made back about $80 so far. That's pretty cool! As much as it looks like I shop, I only do so occasionally. So now you're wondering how does it work? The process is super simple. When you sign up for Rakuten, search for the store you want to shop at, click the "shop now" button, and the page will redirect you to the online store. Once you've made your purchase, a percentage of the purchase will show up in your Rakuten account. Stores will offer 2.0% back or even up to 10.0%. I know I always get excited when I can get some cash back. Not only that but you can also check Rakuten for coupons before you check out. Coupons can help you with some extra savings!
How Does Their Business Model Work?
Basically affiliate marketing is a business model where companies (i.e. online stores) pay people a commission for referring sales. Rakuten is an affiliate to over 2,500 stores. When someone clicks on an Rakuten link to a retail store, Rakuten gets a commision. Therefore, Rakuten gives you (the customer) back some of their commission (via cashback). Everyone wins in this situation.
How Long Does It Take For Rakuten To Register A Purchase?
Once you click through to your store of choice and make a purchase, the cash back will show up in your Rakuten account within seven days. Rakuten send out their Cash Back every three months, via PayPal payment or through what they call, a "Big Fat Check."
The following payout dates are: February 15th, May 15th, August 15th, and November 15th.

How To Maximize Earnings:
If you don't go to Rakuten site directly and shop through there, there's an alternative where you can the add the Rakuten Browser Extension. The Rakuten button will sit at the top of your browser, usually located on the upper right side. When you visit an eligible store, a message will pop up that says "Activate Up To __% Cash Back." You would then click on the button, and you've created a tracking ticket needed to track your order. So much easier!
Conclusion:
Rakuten is simple to use if you like to online shop. It doesn't cost you anything to sign up. If you like to online shop occasionally or often, the amount of cash back you receive adds up overtime. I especially love when Rakuten has "Double Cash Back" because if that's not obvious, you can make back even more.
Some of the cons I have experienced were missed payouts, which you can solve with Rakutens' customer service. (By the way, they have always been top notch when it came to dealing with any issues) Although they have plenty of affiliated shops to purchase from, some of them are limited to certain categories. Also, something to keep in mind that some cash back amounts are "up to" a certain percentage. If you see "up to 5% cash back" it doesn't mean you are going to get the full 5% back. So, the wording can be a bit deceptive sometimes. Other than that, Rakuten has been great and incredibly easy to use. It's legit and I will continue to use it for whenever I online shop.
